A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaws. Due to the biocompatible properties of titanium, a dental implant fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used in solutions for replacing single or multiple missing teeth.
Many people who consider implants have removable, conventional dentures for lower and upper jaws, or have removable bridges. These people experience a significant improvement in their ability to chew food comfortably after their dental implant treatment.
At the first appointment, we use an X-ray to determine if the jaw bone is adequate to hold the titanium posts.
Models of the mouth are then made using a soft, pliable plastic compound. These models show where the gaps are located and provide measurements for a replacement tooth or a bridge.
Treatment with dental implants requires meticulous planning for best results.
When the permanent crown is ready (1-2 weeks normally), the temporary crowns are replaced.
A surgical procedure is required (using local anesthetic and sedative) in which precision channels are created in the jawbone, often using a surgical guide. The implants are then fitted into the sites so that they are in contact with the bone. They generally require two to six months to fuse to the bone before they can have tooth restorations attached to them to complete the process.
Immediately – at the same time an implant is placed (or after a period of healing), an abutment is attached to the implant. This is a device that “abuts” or joins the implant to a tooth form called a crown, which replaces the tooth part you see in the mouth.
The custom crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment to permanently keep it in place and should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
When the permanent crown is ready (1-2 weeks normally), the temporary crowns are replaced.

I am updating my previous review left awhile ago to add additional positive notes. Dr. Sandhu is replacing several old fillings with crowns. We're doing the third one tomorrow morning. Dr. Sandhu is an excellent dentist - fast, accurate and professional. Jen, who runs the office, is always eager to answer all of my claim questions and allay my concerns about my invoices and how much I will end up paying. I almost enjoy going to the dentist at Calistoga Dental. All of the staff is very pleasant, especially Chelsea. She takes very good care of me. And, their annual payment plans are the best I’ve seen or heard of. I highly recommend them.

I love Dr. Pauline Demetrakopulos and her staff! I had removable dentures that made me gag constantly, I lost the desire to eat because it made me sick and every chance I got I took dentures out because I was just miserable so my diet was soft foods and smoothies only. I knew I couldn't live this way 25 more years so I met with Dr. Pauline and she talked me into the 4 on 1 permanent dentures. All done on one day! Dr. Craig Wilson cooperates with Dr. P and he did the actual post implants surgery which was painless and follow up visits, but Dr. P took all the measurements and installed the final permanent denture and I couldn't be happier with the results. I smile all the time now and my new teeth look as good or better than my original teeth. Thank you Dr. Pauline and Dr. Wilson..
I have gone to Dr. Pauline Demetrakopulos since she started her practice in San Francisco many, many years ago. When she sold her San Francisco practice to another dentist, I went a couple of times and realized how GREAT a dentist and person Pauline is and asked if I could see her in St Helena. This is a testament to her excellent skills as well her ability to hire incredible people. The hygienists, assistants, and back office personnel (that's you Connie) all make you feel comfortable and welcomed.

Dr. Pauline is the one who makes you feel like you're in good hands. She filled several of my cavities and made me a great nightguard, and the process was incredibly easy and fast. She listens and cares for you, and the rest of her staff is kind, attentive and great as well! Also, the office looks out into a beautiful vineyard with passing trains which makes you feel like you're in some sort of movie. Beautiful scenery, great dental care, and a caring environment will keep me coming back!!
I would highly recommend Dr. Pauline to anyone and everyone for dentistry! Dr. Pauline and her staff are amazing at what they do! I, unfortunately, broke my tooth and needed a root canal. I was mortified by the idea from hearing all the horror stories and seeing jokes on T.V. about the experience. Not to mention, I also have a phobia of needles. Dr. Pauline put my mind at ease! I did not feel ANY pain what so ever. The experience was so peaceful, I actually fell asleep! I enjoyed my experience so much that now my family members comes here and have shared the same positive experience as well. 5 stars+ for sure!
We love going to see Dr. Pauline and the crew! We especially love seeing Jenn at the front desk, Shumin the Hygienist and Dr. Pauline. Jenn is super friendly and knowledgeable about the field as she is also a RDA. Shumin is so gentle and thorough with her cleanings and educates you on the process. She is so calm and pleasant to have working on your teeth. Dr. Pauline is awesome at fillings. She is gentle and thorough. She is super honest with her exams and doesn't rope you into work that you don't need done. We just love visiting the office and we drive quite the distance just for them! We are very loyal patients and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great dentist experience.

I am a very conservative person by nature so I always wait over a period of time in order to provide a precise and fair evaluation of all parties concerned. Also when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I almost died and so dentists are not on my top ten of favorite professionals to see. Unfortunately, I have always experienced unease, pain, and a great deal of stress when I have seen other dentists or their hygienists and they have done nothing to relieve my stress. That is, until I saw Dr. Demetrakoulos. Her office was calm and welcoming, the staff went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable, understood what they were doing and why. And when I met Dr. Demetrakopulos, she made me feel like I was an old friend. Besides being beautiful, she was professional in her demeanor, very kind, considerate, extremely knowledgable and went out of her way to explain the procedure and to calm any fears that I had. Guess what? Dr. D. is known for her "painless shots" and I have to say I didn't feel the shots at all. The procedure was over in what seemed like a blink and her assistants were just as kind and professional as she was. I was out of the chair with no pain and HAPPILY on my way to work the rest of my day with no soreness or pain. Surprisedly, Dr. D. "personally" phoned me at 8:00PM that evening to see how I was doing. That was almost three years ago and I have seen Dr. D. many times since that initial procedure. She always on top and extremely knowledgable of what's important for your mouth health. She thoroughly explained the procedure while her knowledgable and caring staff provided me with a conservative treatment plan. My ongoing experience with Dr. Demetrkopulos and her staff have been the very same each and every time....EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING, CONSERVATIVE CARE. If you have experienced unfortunate dental experiences like I have, and even if you haven't (lucky you) I highly recommend that you setup an appointment to see Dr. D. as you won't be disappointed. She and her staff go out of their way to take very special care of you as a patient.
